[The US] isn’t exceptional because it’s the best place in the world, or because there’s no other place like it. It’s exceptional because it belongs to us; because [of] our histories, and our families, and the people who are joining us as new members of our constituencies and our new citizens. It belongs to us and therefore it’s worthy of our respect. But it is also worthy of us working on it.

Your marriage isn’t good because you say it’s good. Your relationship with your children isn’t good because you say it is. [It’s] valuable, I love it, it’s worthy, but it’s also worthy of my time and attention to make it better.
